From Midwest roots to commanding the crease for the Le Moyne Dolphins, Lucas Winger has built his rise through patience, preparation, and a deep love for the goalie position.

Winger’s journey into the cage began like many young goalies, simply rotating through the position as a kid. But what quickly separated him from others was his willingness to attack the ball rather than shy away from it. That fearlessness became the foundation of his game and eventually helped him develop into one of the most respected goalies in the Northeast Conference.

Growing up in Illinois, Winger came from a lacrosse community that was smaller than traditional hotbeds on the East Coast. That environment helped shape his perspective on the sport. The tight-knit nature of the Midwest lacrosse scene meant that coaches, teammates, and mentors played a big role in his development. Even now, many of those same people continue to follow and celebrate his success at the college level.

When Winger arrived at Le Moyne, his path wasn’t immediately that of a starter. Like many young goalies at the collegiate level, he spent time learning behind older players and adapting to the speed and physicality of the college game. Rather than letting the backup role frustrate him, he embraced it.

For Winger, the biggest focus during that period was showing up every day with the mentality of a starter. Whether he was getting the majority of the reps or not, he made it a priority to stay positive, support his teammates, and find extra opportunities to improve. That often meant staying after practice to see additional shots or putting in a few extra minutes of work, something he calls “stacking an extra five.”

Eventually, the work paid off when he earned his opportunity to start in goal.

Once Winger took over the crease, he quickly established himself as a steady presence for the Dolphins. His calm demeanor, communication with the defense, and ability to make key saves helped anchor a young Le Moyne team as it continued to grow at the Division I level.

One area of his game he has continued to emphasize is clearing the ball. In Winger’s eyes, a possession doesn’t truly end with a save—it ends when the ball safely reaches the offense. That perspective has pushed him to develop stronger stick skills and confidence throwing outlet passes from different angles, treating the goalie position as a quarterback role within the defense.

Mentally, Winger approaches the position with a focus on preparation and composure. Instead of waiting until game day to get locked in, he begins preparing days in advance by watching film, hydrating, and mentally putting himself in the right mindset. That preparation helps him stay calm in the net, even after goals against.

As he explains, getting scored on is part of playing goalie. What matters most is how quickly you move on and focus on the next play.

That mentality has helped Winger grow into not just a talented goalie, but also a leader. As the last line of defense, he understands that his energy is contagious. When the goalie remains calm and confident, the rest of the defense follows.

Off the field, Winger also gives back to the position by coaching young goalies through private lessons and goalie academies. Working with younger players has reinforced what he believes is the most important trait for a developing goalie: the willingness to attack the ball without fear.

Looking ahead, Winger remains focused on helping Le Moyne continue to build its program at the Division I level while anchoring the defense with the same composure that has defined his game.

His advice to young goalies is simple and direct: See as many shots as you can.
