Talking Goalie With Vermont Alum and Pro Goalie Nick Washuta – LGR Episode 120

When you watch some goalies play they make these really large, flailing movements to make their saves.

Vermont goalie Nick Washuta is the exact opposite of that. He’s very relaxed, very calm, never making more movement than is necessary to make a save.

It’s not the glamour and excitement of a Tillman Johnson but it gets the job done.

This Minnesota born goalie ended up playing his collegiate ball at Vermont where he had a very successful career. He was drafted into the MLL in the 2nd round (11th overall by the Denver Outlaws) and then had a tryout with the Archers.

When I wrote my blog post analyzing the 2021 PLL goalie outlook I said this about Washuta –

The question is – can Washuta earn a spot over the 2 goalies who have been with the Archers in their initial 2 seasons?

We talk about his Archers tryout and he confirmed my suspicion that even if he made ALL of the saves in the tryout, it was going to be a very tough situation to earn a spot.

He just graduated from Vermont in 2020 (with an engineering degree – what’s up lax goalies/engineers) so there’s no doubt we’ll see this tall lefty lacing it up with a PLL team in the near future.

We talk about all those experiences in this podcast as well as how he even learned how to make saves in the first place.
