From Crease to Commentary: Ray Carnicelli’s Lacrosse Journey – Podcast #276

If you’ve followed lacrosse in Florida or tuned into a Jacksonville University game you’ve likely heard the unmistakable voice of Ray “Lax904” Carnicelli calling the action from the sideline. A lifelong student of the game, Ray has carved out a unique space in the lacrosse world, blending his deep knowledge, smooth play-by-play delivery, and authentic passion for growing the sport.

I recall watching a game years ago when the announcer said this:

First thought, that guy is a goalie. And sure enough it was Ray Carnicelli.

A SUNY Cortland alum, Ray captained the men’s varsity lacrosse team while earning his degree in economics, laying the foundation for a life shaped by competition, leadership, and the love of the game. Though his playing days are behind him, he’s remained tethered to the sport in just about every capacity coach, parent, broadcaster, analyst, and community ambassador.

Known by his handle @Lax904, Ray has been a key figure in the rise of lacrosse in North Florida. He’s the longtime host of This Week in North Florida Lacrosse on 1010XL/92.5 FM, a Sunday morning staple that covers everything from high school prospects to NCAA matchups and professional play. If there’s a game being played in Jacksonville, chances are Ray’s talking about it—or calling it live.

Whether it’s interviewing Jacksonville captains on Florida Lacrosse News, running his platform, or highlighting under-the-radar programs and players, Ray’s focus has always been on using media to serve the game. He’s been a relentless advocate for goalie development, youth involvement, and the growth of lacrosse in emerging markets.

This episode is a little different, it’s not a conversation with a current college goalie or pro standout. Instead, it’s a dive into the mind of someone who’s helped build the stage those athletes perform on. From his days playing DIII ball in upstate New York to becoming one of the most trusted voices in Florida lacrosse, Ray Carnicelli’s journey is a reminder that growing the game doesn’t always mean making saves it can also mean telling the stories, giving back, and showing up year after year.

Enjoy this conversation with Ray “Lax904” Carnicelli a true ambassador for the sport and a voice every lacrosse fan should know.
