In this week’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, Coach Damon sits down to chat with Virginia goalie Ashley Vernon.

Ashley began her college career at East Carolina University where she started as a freshman.

In her first season with the Pirates, Vernon was even named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 24, 2020, after making nine saves in ECU’s 12-11 win over Campbell (Feb. 22).

The Medford, NJ native didn’t start out with a love for the goalie position right away. She enjoyed being able to score goals and run around as a midfielder until she entered high school. That’s where she was able to develop her love for the fast-paced nature and energy of the position that drove her to become a full-time goalie and eventually get recruited to play division 1 lacrosse at ECU.

Despite her love for her team and coaches, Vernon made the decision to transfer out of ECU in January of 2022, in an attempt to find a better school for her education.

The 2-time AAC All-Academic Team selection landed on Virginia as her destination. UVA’s teaching hospital was a huge selling point for Ashley as she is a pre-med student.

In her first season with the Cavaliers Vernon has had a solid start with 13.47 GAA, .380 save % and making 82 saves.

Ashley joins the show today to talk about her progress in the net, why she transferred, her experience at Virginia, and much more!
