2021 C. Markland Kelly winner, Georgetown Goalie Owen McElroy – LGR Episode #103

Listen on Apple Podcast

This season with Georgetown goalie Owen McElroy joined a pretty elite group of netminders.

Not only did he help his team reach the quarterfinals of the national championship tournament (losing to eventual champ Virginia), the senior became the 1st ever male Hoya goalie to win Goalie of the Year (the C. Markland Kelly Award).

Something not even his mentor and a goalie ripping it up in the pros right now, Georgetown alum Nick Marrocco, could accomplish during his time in Washington DC.

Due to the COVID cancelled season, Owen is coming back for another year and as he prepares for his final season at Georgetown we discuss his start in goal and how went about learning how to make saves as a young keeper.

He changed up his style of goalie play a little for the 2021 season and we discuss the new style and the reasoning behind it. We discuss some of the goalie greats that he’s learned from along the way.

Owen also has the best team pic I’ve seen in awhile (we of course talk about this elite headshot in the podcast).

Pretty clear in which year he was goalie of the year…
