Today on the show, I’m fired up to sit down with Dylan Renner, the 2024 Division II National Champion goalie from Adelphi University.
Dylan didn’t grow up dreaming of being a goalie, he actually started on attack until one day, his team needed someone to hop in net, and he volunteered. That one decision changed everything. He’ll tell you straight up, the early years were rough. No coaching, no structure, just figuring it out on his own. But once he started working with former Syracuse goalie Alex Rozier, things clicked. Dylan learned the fundamentals, the mindset, and the confidence to own the crease.
He began his college career at LIU, where he had the chance to back up PLL goalie Will Mark and soak up everything he could. After one season, he transferred to Adelphi, he describes it as the best decision he’s ever made. Closer to home, surrounded by teammates who believed in him, Dylan found his groove. And in 2024, he helped lead Adelphi to an undefeated season and a National Championship, capping it off with a standout performance in the title game.
Dylan’s game is a mix of old-school toughness and modern precision. He plays low and balanced, keeps his hands out front, and isn’t afraid to throw his body behind shots. He studies the greats: Drew Adams, Blaze Riorden, Brian Dougherty, but brings his own flavor. His motto, “See ball, save ball,” isn’t just a saying; it’s written on his helmet and defines how he approaches every rep.
What stands out about Dylan is his attention to the little things, the footwork tweaks, the reset routines, the breathing between shots. He’s constantly looking for ways to get 1% better. He even practices with a short stick sometimes just to speed up his hands. That attention to detail, paired with his calm leadership, made him one of the best goalies in the country last year.
After the championship, Dylan got the call every college goalie dreams about, a chance to suit up with the PLL Archers for a training camp when their backup went down. It was a short stint, but but it was priceless to him.
What I love about Dylan is how grounded he is. He’s confident but humble, intense but thoughtful. He understands that being a great goalie isn’t just about making saves, it’s about leading, communicating, and staying mentally sharp through the highs and lows.
