Current Johns Hopkins goalie Josh Kirson has had an interesting journey on his way to Homewood Field.
The Newton, MA native was an all-star standout at River High School winning team MVP and being named a BostonLax All-American.
However, instead of heading to a D1 program straight out of high-school Kirson headed north for a post-grad year at the Hill Academy in Ontario, Canada.
While at the Hill Academy, Kirson got an early look at what being a collegiate student-athlete would look like traveling for games, having study hall sessions, and training like a D1 athlete.
His performance at the Hill Academy got him a spot in the 2016 Under Armour All-American game.
Kirson then committed to Ohio State University and had his eyes set on battling to be the starting goalie for the Buckeyes.
Unfortunately, a week before arriving on campus Josh suffered a significant knee injury which would force him to redshirt as a true freshman in 2017, the year Ohia State advanced to the national championship game.
It was still a memorable experience for Kirson, who took the momentum of that redshirt season into eventually earning the starting job at OSU during the final seven games of his redshirt freshman year the following season.
Josh started 25 of the 27 games that he played in while at Ohio State where he held a 9.95 career goals-against average, .523 save percentage, 275 saves, and was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week of Feb. 11 after making 18 saves in an 11-4 win at Boston University.
In 2020, Josh graduated from OSU with a degree in finance and would then transfer to Johns Hopkins University to pursue a master’s in financial econometrics and an MBA.
In 2021, Kirson Started the first nine games in goal before suffering a season-ending injury in a 17-11 loss at Rutgers. Prior to the injury Kirson was having a solid season for the rebuilding Blue Jays and has continued to build on that season heading into 2022.
Josh joins the show today to take about his time at Ohio State, overcoming injuries, how he’s changed his game over the years, and much more!
