There’s an old cliche about goalies on youth teams. Find the biggest kid and make them the goalie.

With lacrosse goalies most times you want the most athletic kid but this was the case for Boston University goalie Matt Garber

“I wanted to be an attackman. I wanted to be in the limelight there. Only problem was I was really fat and big. I was 4’11” 155lbs. So they needed a goalie and I was clearly not a good attackman. I didn’t cry when I got hit by the ball so it stuck”.

Over time Matt Garber refined his goalie game thanks to some great coaches along the way including Coach Jack Runkel.

As a kid Garber was big. The kind of big where when you look at a picture of him next to a teammate you ask yourself – is the kid on the left the same age? He’s still a big dude. At 6’2, 215lbs Matt is definitely a role model for the large goalie.

Listen to Matt’s story as he found success in the goal and made his way to Boston University where he now the starter and vying to help the Terriers win a Patriot League title.

They’re currently undefeated 6-0 in the Patriot League with 2 huge games remaining vs Lehigh (5-1) and Army (5-1) which will determine the final seeds as they head into the Patriot League tournament in May.

Enjoy this episode with an awesome young man – Matt Garber.
