My guest on today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat podcast is Matt Sefcik.
Matt played college lacrosse at Wagner College a small D1 program in Staten Island, NY.
Matt had actually written an excellent article in the past for us on the blog titled “Lacrosse Goalie Life at a Small D1 School”.
The article outlines his experience playing at Wagner College and gives you an insight into what it’s like being a D1 athlete at a small school.
Matt got his start in the cage as many young goalies do. The native of Towaco, NJ was the youngest sibling of three boys and the only way he was able to play lacrosse with his brothers was by hoping in the cage.
He had a knack for the position right away and learned his craft through trial by fire with his brothers as well as being mentored by the older high school goalies on his brother’s teams.
Sefcik came from a powerhouse high school program at Morristown-Beard School in northern New Jersey that had alumni such as PLL Atlas face-off man Trevor Baptiste.
Despite winning a Prep B State Championship and being First-Team All-NJAC Matt didn’t get many offers during the recruiting process.
Regardless, Sefcik didn’t give up hope and decided to throw out a big net trying to contact as many coaches as possible to see who would want him to come to play for their school.
That’s when Wagner came calling and made it clear to Matt that they wanted him to play for the Seahawks.
Matt also liked the idea of going to a smaller school where he could learn in a smaller class setting and get more from his educational experience.
Sefcik started all 4 seasons as a Seahawk finishing his career with a career save total of 693, a figure that ranked second among all active Division I goalies at the time, as well as second on the Wagner all-time record list, and was also named to the NEC All-Rookie Team during his Freshman year.
Matt is now studying for his Ph.D. in clinical psychology and joined the podcast to talk about mental tools you can use to help you gain an edge on your opponent as a goalie.
I hope you enjoy this episode with Matt Sefcik!
