On today’s Lax Goalie Rat Podcast episode, I sit down to chat with Goalie Coach in the Southern California Area, Bryan McCarthy AKA Coach Mac.
Coach Mac has been in the game for a long time with over 20 years of lacrosse experience, with a specialty in Goalie training.
The Southern California native, like me, didn’t exactly grow up in the lacrosse hotbed that California is today. Like many goalies playing in a non-lacrosse hotbed, McCarthy ended up playing with a less-than-experienced team and found himself at times facing a lot of shots and being under constant pressure to perform.
He discusses how he handled this pressure and the lessons he’s learned from his playing days that have helped him develop training philosophies now as a coach.
Coach Mac brings a ton of energy and knowledge to the goaltending position. Whether it be helping with technique, positioning, hand-eye coordination, or communication, McCarthy has seen it all and has helped develop many of goalies during his time coaching.
Where Coach really sets himself apart though is his approach to the mental game and helping his goalies stay relaxed in the cage.
During the podcast, he talks about the “Flush It Mindset” which understanding how and why it is important to take a second to acknowledge and learn from a mistake and move on or “Flush It”!
Coach Mac grew up idolizing legendary Navy goalie Matt Russell, whom he modeled his game after as a smaller goalie. Russell’s athleticism and sheer ferocity in the cage are what have helped Coach develop his style of play and also how he works with goalies in today’s games.
