Fairfield goalie Owen Hirsch didn’t start in the net — he began as an attackman before trying goalie in fourth grade and finding a position that clicked. Since then, his journey has been about evolving his style, building confidence, and becoming a leader. After starting every game in the 2025 season and finishing with a .514 save percentage, Owen has established himself as a core piece of Fairfield’s defense.
In this episode, Owen shares how his approach to the position has changed over the years. Each season has brought something different, but staying set and being positionally sound is his foundation. He talks about tracking the ball all the way to the stick, staying locked in on the ball instead of the shooter, and trusting that if you move with intent, your body will follow.
Owen opens up about the mental side of the game — what it takes to stay confident and focused, especially after goals or tough stretches. He talks about using a reset routine, working with coaches and sports psychologists, and learning how to lead by example. Confidence, he says, is contagious, and something he tries to bring into every drill and every game. That mindset helped carry him through an in-season injury and the ups and downs of a year that started 9–0 before taking a turn late in the season.
Now, Owen is leaning into his role as a leader, working with younger goalies, and focusing on getting better every day. Whether he’s warming up with a short stick to sharpen his hands or coaching kids on how to build confidence, Owen is all about the little things that build consistency. He’s a goalie who embraces the pressure, loves the challenge, and is constantly chasing growth — on the field and off.
