Last week was Jim Beardmore and this week we continue the trend with another Maryland Terrapin goalie Richard Shassian.
Coach Sash (as folks now call him) walked onto the Maryland team in the late 70’s and eventually earned the starting role and took the team all the way to the finals in 1979.
In 2018 Rich purchased Deep South Lacrosse in Central Florida which features the Box, an indoor training facility that’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the Orlando area.
Shassian is the inventor of the CL18 goalie head. A product revolution in both in terms of its design and its price point (just $49). In this episode we discuss the concept behind this goalie head and also dip into a controversial subject of why other goalies heads on the market go for twice as much as the CL18.
If you haven’t seen the CL18 here is the pic of the one that Coach Shassian was generous enough to give to me:
This is from their awesome Super Hero line of CL18s. “You are much stronger than you think you are. Trust me.” – Superman (probably referring to the strength and stability of the CL18 goalie head).
Hope you enjoy this conversation with Coach Sash were we touch on playing in the 70’s at Maryland, him coaching goalies in Florida, Deep South lacrosse, and the CL18 goalie head.

Lacrosse is my passion! The game has given me so much and this blog is my way of giving back to the lax community. Specifically the most bad a$$ part of that community - the goalies! After learning to play goalie from scratch, I wanted to create a site where I could share what I learned with others so they too can become champions in the crease and in life. Learn more about Coach Damon.
