What does it take to become a great lacrosse goalie? For Logan McNaney, the answer goes far beyond making saves.

Pro lacrosse goalie Logan McNaney shares the journey that took him from first stepping into the cage as a kid to competing at the highest levels of the sport. Along the way, he learned the importance of developing your own style and finding what works best for you as a goalie.

One of the biggest themes of the conversation is positioning.

Logan explains how improving his positioning at Maryland changed his game, including a drill that helped him understand how to stay behind the ball and put himself in better positions to make saves. He also shares how working with teammates and learning how shooters think helped him better understand the mental side of facing a shot.

Clearing is another major part of his game.

Logan believes goalies should take pride in their stick work and be able to contribute to the clear. He shares drills he uses to improve his passing, develop both hands, and reduce the time between making a save and getting ready to make the next play.

But becoming a great goalie isn’t just physical.

Logan opens up about recovering from an ACL injury, the mental challenges that came with being away from the game, and the importance of taking things one day at a time. He also discusses confidence, visualization, and how remembering past moments of success can help during difficult stretches.

The conversation also gets into goalie equipment, stick setup, clean saves, lateral movement, and lessons Logan has learned from coaches and other goalies throughout his career.

For younger goalies, Logan’s message is simple:

Have fun. Don’t beat yourself up. Trust yourself and remember that it’s a game.

Logan Mcnaney Stick Setup

  • Head: Maverik Krease. He previously used the Warrior Nemesis for a long time and switched to the Maverik head.
  • Pocket: A deep pocket with a strong channel. He had it strung similarly to his previous Warrior setup.
  • Shooters: No shooters. He gradually removed them from his stick while at Maryland and has continued using the setup without shooters.
  • Stringing: He says he’s not very knowledgeable about stringing himself, but a teammate initially strung the head for him. He likes the way it throws while also limiting rebounds.
