On today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Kaitlyn Hunsinger, the talented senior goalie from Salisbury University.
Kaitlyn recently completed a phenomenal season with the Seagulls in 2023, and we’re excited to delve into her journey as a lacrosse goalie.
Taking over the starting role for Salisbury at the beginning of the season, Hunsinger proved her mettle by providing exceptional goaltending for her team.
Throughout the season, she accumulated an impressive stat line, including 119 saves, a 50.9 save percentage, and a remarkable 7.91 goals-against average. Starting all but one game, Kaitlyn spent over 870 minutes guarding the cage and boasted a solid 14-4 record.
Her outstanding performance earned her a spot on the D3 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Third-Team All-American List and the IWLCA Chesapeake All-Region teams.
Hailing from Lutherville, MD, Kaitlyn’s journey as a goalie began at an early age. Drawn to the position due to its reduced running requirements, she honed her skills by reading books and seeking guidance from her father.
Kaitlyn’s dedication led her to attend camps alongside other goalies and goalie coaches, including notable figures like Megan Taylor, allowing her to refine her techniques and develop her game.
As Kaitlyn aspired to play lacrosse at the collegiate level, she realized the importance of standing out to recruiters. Together with her father, she meticulously crafted highlight videos, showcasing her exceptional saves and skills.
Through her dedication and hard work, she caught the attention of the coaching staff at Salisbury University, ultimately securing her commitment to play for the Seagulls.
Despite her undeniable talent, Kaitlyn initially found herself waiting for her opportunity with the Seagulls. In a solid goaltending room, she bided her time and gained invaluable experience.
Finally, during her sophomore season, she stepped into the cage and made her presence known, accumulating a 6.46 goals-against average, 21 saves, and a 2-0 record in 241:24 minutes of action.
Her junior year further solidified her role, appearing in 12 games and showcasing her skills with notable performances.
Kaitlyn attributes her time as a backup as instrumental in her development as a goalie. Learning from the sidelines allowed her to refine her style, understand the game better, and approach her role with a determined mindset.
This growth and preparation laid the foundation for her breakout season in 2023, where she confidently assumed the starting position and made a significant impact.
During the podcast, Kaitlyn shares her insights on various topics related to goaltending. She delves into the qualities of effective leadership, discussing how she has embraced this role within her team. Additionally, she shares her experiences in overcoming slumps and offers valuable advice on how to bait shooters effectively.
