Understanding Box Lacrosse Goalie with Steve Orleman – LGR 196

This Episode Is Brought To You By:

My guest on today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast is NLL Goalie with the New York Riptide, Steve Orleman.

We’re branching off into new territories of the Lacrosse Goalie Universe in this episode as I had a great time chatting with Box Lacrosse Goalie with Steve.

Steve is in the middle of his second full season with the NLL as the starting netminder for the Riptide.

Last season Orleman was outstanding in his first full season in the NLL. The Kitchener native played a rookie single-season high of 986 minutes and made a record 656 saves while also sporting a 12.10 goals against average and .767 save percentage and was named to the NLL’s all-rookie team for his efforts.

Orleman has a unique story in that he isn’t the only goalie in his family.

His older brother Kevin is also a box lacrosse goalie in the NLL currently with the Riptide as well.

Steve talks about his relationship with his brother on the show and how having a goalie sibling helped challenge him to compete the be the better goalie in the family.

Orelman was selected 19th overall by the Georgia Swarm in the 2018 NLL Entry Draft after an outstanding season with the Brampton Excelsiors in the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League (OJALL) where they played for the Minto Cup, the Canadian Jr. A Box Lacrosse National Championship.

He would go on to spend the 2018-19 and 2019-20 NLL seasons as a member of the Swarm’s practice squad before signing the Riptide in 2020.

In 2022, Steve is currently sitting at 6th in the NLL in saves with 407 while sporting a 74% save percentage and a 14.83 GAA.

I hope you enjoy the episode with Steve where we discuss topics like the difference between field and box goalie, how to stop inside shots, and the mental game.
