Bringing the Positive Vibes with Bella McCullough – Episode 191

This Episode Is Brought To You By:

My guest on today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat podcast is Team Mexico and Longwood University goalie Bella McCullough.

Bella is coming off a busy summer where she participated in the 2022 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships with Team Mexico in Towson, MD.

The Elk Grove, CA native made the Mexican National Team as a senior in high school and was tremendous for her squad finishing with an 8.00 GAA and .549 Save Percentage in 8 games played.

Bella talks about her experience at the World Championships and lessons she learned while playing for team Mexico including the importance of being a positive anchor for your teammates while you’re in the net.

Bella was born in Atlanta, GA, and got her first chance to step in the cage in the 4th grade for her U9 team. It was the first-time players were allowed to play goalie and she knew that she wanted to be the first one to hope in the net.

She quickly fell in love with the position and when her family moved to California was able to start learning the position from D1 goalie with UC Davis, Kai Murphy.

Kai had a huge impact on Bella’s development as a goalie and helped her with the clearing game and learning to not be afraid of stepping to the ball.

Playing in college has been the goal since day 1 of playing lacrosse for Bella.

She had looks going into her sophomore year from D2, D3, and NAIA and would end up committing to a DII school in her junior year.

However, heading into her senior season she chose to de-commit from that school and sign with William Penn University.

Former William Penn coach Katelyn Sherman’s vision for her team and coaching drive made Bella feel like she was a part of the team before evening commit to the program which made her decision easy.

Her performance at the Women’s World Championships started to turn some heads though and after fall ball Bella received a D1 offer to play at Longwood University and is transferring to play with the Lancers ahead of the 2023 season and achieving a lifelong dream of playing D1 lacrosse.

I hope you enjoy this episode with Bella Bella McCullough where we discuss topics like handling burnout, positive self-talk, and lessons learned at the World Championships.
