In this week’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, Coach Damon sits down to interview the 2021 Big East Women’s Goalie of the Year, former Denver goalie Amelia Cole.
Amelia didn’t secure her starting spot at Denver until her senior season. However, in 2021, when she did earn the starting gig Amelia had quite the season for the Pioneers.
Cole led the Big East in GAA (8.99), was second in Save % (.449), and sat fourth in saves per game (7.24).
The 2021 season culminated with Cole and Pioneers winning the Big East Championship 13-7 over the UConn Huskies and making it to the Second Round of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament before losing to Northwestern.
As a result of her stellar performance, Amelia was chosen as the Big East Goalie of the Year and also received First Team Big East honors.
Prior to arriving in Denver, the Alexandria, VA native played her high school lacrosse at Bishop Ireton High School where she led the Cardinals to 2014, 2015, and 2017 VISAA State Championships and 2014, 2016, and 2017 WCAC Conference Championships.
Amelia also holds Bishop Ireton HS program records of 496 career saves, 1,044 career shots on goal, 179 single-season saves, 392 single-season shots on goals, and 33 single-game shots on goal.
Unfortunately, due to graduate school commitments, we won’t be seeing Amelia playing for the Pioneers for a 5th season.
However, Cole definitely left her mark during her time at Denver and still plans to remain close with the team even though she won’t be suiting up this season.
