Lacrosse goalie gloves are arguably one of the more important pieces of protective equipment a goalie needs when stepping into the cage.
The hands and especially the thumb are fragile and exposed when goalies are holding the stick in their hands so finding gloves that provide you with protection against hard shots hitting your hand and worse causing bone breaks is extremely important.
This is why if you are a serious lacrosse goalie who is looking for a top-quality piece of equipment, the Maverik Max Goalie Gloves should be on your radar. They’re calling these the ’25 model and they’re the new version of the Maverik Maxs.
These gloves have been designed with the specific needs of goalies in mind, providing both protection and flexibility for optimal performance.

Helping us out with our review today is Lax Goalie Rat Sponsored Athlete and Michigan starting goalie, Shane Carr.
In terms of goalie gloves what we want to look for is:
protection
comfort
fit
durability
look / style
price.
In this review, we will go over all of these aspects and provide you with our final thoughts at the end.

Maverik Max Goalie Gloves: Protection
One of the most notable features of these gloves is the Torque Loc 2 design, a two-part thumb construction that offers optimal flexibility and ideal protection from hyper-extension and high-velocity impacts.
I think the Max gloves are one of the best on the market in terms of thumb protection. There are other good ones, but this is my go too as of right now.
The Torque Loc 2 is the same thumb design from the previous model Maverik Max or the Maverik M5. So no upgrade here to thumb but still a very solid protection system.
That being said, I don’t think we’ve seen a goalie glove yet that is built to take a direct blast to the thumb, and we’ve heard from users of the Maverik Max gloves that they’re still broken thumbs and other issues when taking direct shots to this area.
This may be due to the amount of space in the thumb area that doesn’t completely keep your thumb from moving around on impact.
If you’re looking for extra protection in the thumb area, we’d recommend reaching out to Guardian Gear who offers a customized protective thumb splint to keep it safe when you are in net.
During our video review (below) Shane Carr showed us a custom splint his sport’s trainer made that helps keep his thumb stable and safe:
Shane’s thoughts on the new Maverik Max goalie gloves:
“This is probably one of the nicest gloves I’ve ever used. I’ve been a fan of Maverik since my middle school years. I think the Torque Loc technology does a good job of combining the maneuverability of the thumb while also protecting your thumb from the impact of the ball. I also think it’s the coolest-looking glove there is for goalies. The thumb isn’t very noticeable and Maverik just does such a good job at designing gloves. To give myself some extra protection in my thumb I have a plastic thumb insert that I created with my athletic trainer. I think the next step in the evolution of goalie gloves is to provide more stability to the thumb area so that there is no wiggle room. When the thumb is in their nice and tight and it can’t move around that’s when I think it’s at its most protected.”
The biggest change you will see on the new Maverik Max glove line is their Anaform ridges that provide slash protection while maintaining flexibility and mobility in the fingers.
This newly designed finger protection, like that of the STX Surgeon RZR gloves, is a single piece of plastic with five flex points that allows better flexibility and range of motion in your fingers as the padding will allow the glove to form with your finger.
This provides you with a comfortable and freeing feeling in your fingers as the glove allows for the maximum range of movement in that area.
Shane’s thoughts:
“I was a fan of using this glove from the beginning I think it does offer a lot more protection. The additional padding to the fingertip area gets rid of any restrictions in your movement while also protecting your fingers from taking the impact of the ball. And I have to add style points for the look of the ridges as well.”
The glove also comes with triple-density foam and rigid inserts in key zones across the thumb and back of the hand to protect you from the impact of the ball as well.
This is pretty standard across all Maverik gloves and I’m not sure if there’s anything new about this protection but I feel safe facing a slash when stepping outside of the crease with these gloves on my hand.
Shane’s thoughts: “Everywhere you look at this glove you kind of just get the sense that it’s going to protect you. It really covers every part of your hand. So when you come out of the cage and take a slash to the hand the padding really does a great job at absorbing a lot of that impact which I really like.”
Maverik Max Goalie Gloves: Comfort & Durability
When it comes to comfort and durability, the Maverik Max gloves do not disappoint.
The Max glove comes with Maverik’s Synthetic Ax suede palm which provides you with the maximum amount of comfort and durability when it comes to gloves.
Maverik has also added texturized rubber grooves to the tips of the fingers, thumb, and palm area to provide you with extra grip when using these gloves.
The other piece that Maverik has added to the Max gloves is their Flowcool vents which are massive plastic holes on the back of the hand that provide extra ventilation in the glove to keep your hand cool, especially on those hot summer days.
The gloves are also built with a traditional profile and additional volume in the fingers and back of the hand for increased comfort, and the Durastretch panels across the knuckle improve flexibility and control for a broken-in fit from day one.
I remember playing with gloves from the early 2000’s and it took a full week of practices to break in a pair of gloves. Gone are those days as these suckers are ready to go day 1.
Like the previous model, the glove also features a magnetic wrist cuff that eliminates Velcro snags and an adjustability cuff that allows for either maximum protection or a flared fit for unrestricted wrist motion.
Shane’s thoughts:
This is probably the most comfortable glove you can buy on the market. The first thing I notice when I got this glove was how comfortable it was when I put it on. Some of the old gloves I’ve used in the past had a lot more mesh texture on them and it didn’t always feel that nice to use. One of the problems I’ve had with gloves I’ve used in the past in that they start to tear in the palm of the glove. I got this glove at the beginning of fall ball and I’ve noticed the level of quality in the glove is really high and I haven’t had any tearing in the glove at all. Also, it’s starting to get warm here in Ann Arbour and I’m starting to notice how the bigger vent holes keep you cool on hotter days.
Maverik Max Goalie Glove: Look & Fit
The new Maverik Max goalie glove comes in small, medium, large, and extra-large sizing.
We’ve seen from our own experience using the glove as well as hearing from users of the glove that it does tend to fit big in terms of sizing so make sure to take that into consideration if you’re having to purchase the glove without trying it on.
I got the extra-large glove and even though it doesn’t fit completely snugly to my hand it doesn’t feel like it’s too big for me either.
The gloves come in stock colors of white, grey, and black but if your team is purchasing a set of gloves they do come in custom colors like Shane’s fire pair.
Keep in mind the minimum number of gloves required for a team order is 12.
Shane’s thoughts: I have both the 13” (large) and 14” (extra-large) sizes. I’m a bigger fan of the 13” gloves as I feel that it fits my hand a bit better, but I find that both sizes fit really well. I’m 6” and if you’re somewhere around the same size as me I’d recommend getting the large option.
Here is a sizing chart for reference:
Maverik Max Goalie Gloves: Price
At $180.00, the Maverik Max Goalie Gloves are on the pricier side, but they are worth the investment for serious lacrosse goalies who prioritize protection and performance.
You can purchase a pair of these gloves at Lacrosse Monkey for $179.99.
As a cheaper alternative you could go for an older Maverik model like the Maverik M5 for $140 or the older version Maverik Max (no longer made new but you maybe find a pair used on Sideline Swap).
