Betty Nelson is a rising star in collegiate lacrosse, known for her composure, athleticism, and leadership as the starting goalkeeper for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
Hailing from Littleton, Colorado, Nelson’s lacrosse journey began in boys’ leagues due to the limited opportunities for girls in her area. She played boys’ lacrosse from ages 7 to 12, often competing against older players.
Her passion for the sport and determination to excel led her to Columbine High School, where she became a four-year varsity starter.
During her high school career, she amassed 542 saves with a 54% save percentage and was honored as the 2023 Colorado 5A Player of the Year. Nelson also earned spots on the U15, U16, and U18 U.S. National Development Teams and was ranked No. 4 in Inside Lacrosse’s Power 100 for the Class of 2023.
At UNC, Nelson quickly made her mark. In her first collegiate start, she recorded seven saves, contributing to a dominant 14-2 victory over James Madison. Throughout the 2025 season, she has maintained a save percentage over 50% and played a pivotal role in UNC’s top-ranked scoring defense.
Her exceptional performance earned her a spot on the 2025 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, recognizing her as one of the nation’s elite players.
Off the field, Nelson is pursuing a degree in psychology and is known for her dedication to mentoring younger players. She emphasizes the importance of mental resilience, preparation, and teamwork.
