On today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, I’m joined by Mindfulness and Performance Coach Emily Perrin.

Mindfulness is a practice that involves intention without judgment, allowing us to gain perspective and awareness that goes against our autopilot mode in daily life.

As goalies, this skill is crucial for our performance, yet it’s often neglected in our training routines.

Emily’s life has always revolved around sports and coaching. With her father being a DI basketball coach and performance coach, she grew up immersed in the world of athletics. While Emily didn’t come from a lacrosse background, she played soccer and went on to play Division I for the University of Virginia Cavaliers.

After her playing career, Emily transitioned seamlessly into coaching at the youth level and spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Penn.

Through her coaching role, she discovered that athletes often struggle with stress and pressure on a daily basis. She also realized the lack of adequate resources available to support athletes’ mental health.

This realization prompted Emily to take a different path. Instead of following the traditional coaching route, she decided to become a mental health coach.

Drawing from her own experiences with chronic anxiety and panic disorder, Emily embarked on a journey that led her to mindfulness, yoga, and working with professionals who addressed her overall well-being.

Within a few months of committing to mindfulness practice, Emily noticed a significant improvement in her mental well-being. This transformation inspired her to study mindfulness meditation and explore how to apply it to athletes in the 21st century.

Today, Emily works with high-level athletes, including PLL players like Jules Heningburg and Michael Sowers. Her approach involves creating unique and individual programming that incorporates yoga, mindfulness, and meditation to help athletes enhance their performance.

By addressing athletes’ health holistically and utilizing these techniques and tools, Emily helps them reach and maintain peak performance. Learning mindfulness can help athletes be present in the moment, gain personal awareness, and enhance how they interact with themselves and others.
