On this episode of the Lax Goalie Rat podcast, I’m thrilled to welcome Sports Psychologist and Mental Performance Coach, Dr. Nate Zinsser.
I frequently receive messages from goalies of all ages seeking advice on enhancing their mental game. It’s a crucial aspect of our role as goalies that often goes unnoticed.
That’s why I’m delighted to have Dr. Zinsser on the show today. With his extensive background in mental performance and over 30 years of helping athletes achieve peak performance, his insights are invaluable for goalies everywhere.
My introduction to Dr. Zinsser came during an interview with Army goalie Knox Dent. As the Director of the Performance Psychology Program at Army West Point, Dr. Zinsser has worked with numerous college athletes, including lacrosse goalies like Dent with the Black Knights.

Knox shared how Dr. Zinsser played a crucial role in developing his mental game with the Black Knights, helping him take pride in being a backup goalie. Dr. Zinsser continued to make a significant impact during Knox’s remarkable final season and his first as a starter with the Black Knights.
Dr. Zinsser has been a pioneer in applied sport psychology for over thirty years, dedicating his career to training the minds of the U.S. Military Academy’s cadets as they prepare for high-stakes situations on the battlefield.
In addition to his military work, he has coached world-class athletes, including a Super Bowl MVP, numerous Olympic medalists, professional ballerinas, NHL All-Stars, and college All-Americans. His expertise lies in teaching them to overcome pressure and excel on the grandest stages.
Dr. Zinsser’s latest book, “The Confident Mind: A Battle-Tested Guide for Unshakable Performance,” offers a captivating exploration of the science of confidence. It provides readers with a practical, step-by-step program to harness their belief in themselves and achieve success in any field. “The Confident Mind” serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding, building, protecting, and relying on confidence when performance matters most.

Dr. Zinsser joins the show to delve into topics such as overcoming slumps, managing performance anxiety, and offering tips for goalie parents.
