2019 Premier Lacrosse League Goalie Stick Setups
We’re two weeks into the new Premier Lacrosse League and I have to say, if you’re not watching, you’re missing out. It’s really awesome!
The on-field mic’s and in-game interviews. The extra cameras. The up and down action. And most importantly – the elite goalie play.
I think with the short shot clock goalies are seeing quicker shots but still some of the goalie performances so far have been unbelievable!
Week 1 saw a pure rookie in Timmy Troutner stand on his head against a very strong Atlas team that many picked to be the league favorite.
The only thing that I dislike is I don’t really know which team to root for. But still each game is really excited to watch.
I hope to make some PLL save edits soon. As soon as I can get my hands on the raw videos.
Here are the stick setups for the 6 starting goalies in the Premier Lacrosse League:
PLL Goalie Stick Setups
Tim Troutner – Redwoods
Timmy Troutner has the same stick he used college. Which makes sense given that just a few weeks ago he was still playing in college.
Timmy is the only goalie on this list I’ve yet to interview for the podcast. Timmy – if you’re reading this – let’s doooo it!
Edit: Interview with Redwoods goalie Tim Troutner
- Head: Black STX Eclipse 2
- Mesh: 12 Diamond – 2 U’s
- Shaft: Goalie Length
- Gloves: Black Maverik M4 Goalie Gloves
- Throat Guard: Warrior Cascade TP-S
Jack Concannon – Atlas
Jack also had an amazing game week 1 even though Atlas was on the losing end.
- Head: White STX Eclipse 2
- Mesh: 12 Diamond – 2 U’s
- Shaft: Goalie Length
- Gloves: STX Shield Goalie Gloves
- Throat Guard: Warrior Cascade TP-S
Check out my podcast with Jack Concannon.
John Galloway – Chrome
The Chrome have started out 0-2 with 2 OT losses but Galloway is keeping them in the games. Including making several big OT saves (but I guess not enough).
- Head: White STX Eclipse 2
- Mesh: 12 Diamond – 2 U’s
- Shaft: Goalie Length
- Gloves: STX Shield Goalie Gloves
- Throat Guard: Warrior Cascade TP-S
My podcast with John Galloway.
Kyle Bernlohr – Whipsnakes
Out of all the goalies in the PLL, Bernlohr might be the king right now. He’s at least looked that way through two weeks of play and his stellar performances have them Whipsnakes sitting at 2-0.
Kyle is an STX sponsored athlete so no surprise his gear his a full STX setup:

Blaze Riorden – Redwoods
- Head: White STX Eclipse 2
- Mesh: 12 Diamond – 3 straight across
- Shaft: Goalie Length
- Gloves: STX Shield Goalie Gloves
- Throat Guard: Warrior Cascade TP-S
My podcast with Blaze Riorden.
Adam Ghitelman – Archers
Ghitelman is my favorite goalie starting in the PLL. Let’s give up for the shorter, quicker goalies! He’s dominating too – leading the Archers to a 2-0 start with his all-around great play!
- Head: Dyed STX Eclipse 2
- Mesh: 12 Diamond – 2 black straight across
- Shaft: Attack Length
- Gloves: STX Shield Goalie Gloves
- Throat Guard: Warrior Cascade TP-S
Also check out my podcast with Adam Ghitelman.
Conclusion
There we go. The stick setups of the starting goalies in the PLL.
A clean sweep for the STX Eclipse 2 goalie head. It’s combination of light weight and stiffness has really made this head the industry leader.
Granted I haven’t played with the new Warrior Nemi 3 head yet but nobody is using that one?
With the exception of Troutner, all goalies are using the STX goalie gloves too.
All like their 12 diamond mesh with a shaft slightly longer than attack. 32-34″ if I had to guess.
Until next time! Coach Damon

I always love seeing former players still rocking it…Had the pleasure of coaching John Galloway way back when he was in 8th grade…knew back then we was going to be good! Just wish I had cable to check out some live games though I have seen some of the videos online.
Hey Dave! That’s awesome. What did you see in him at that young age that you knew he’d be that good?
I don’t have cable either but I purchased the NBC sports PLL streaming package (it’s like $35) so I watch them on my computer.
The PLL did a goalie highlight edit on Instagram. Nice to see that.
Yeah 1st one I’ve seen. All game highlights were just the goals.
Loving the PLL. Game pace is highly entertaining for TV.
Love the fact the refs are letting it get real physical too. That allows the defense to have much bigger impact.
Most of the goalies have been really really good. I was wondering if the yellow ball helped a little with that?
Now if they can keep getting more and more butts in the seats and eyes on the broadcast this could explode.
Yeah I’m also loving it.
I think good goalie play has more to do with the 52 second shot clock. Don’t give the offense as much time to get the perfect look.
Interestingly enough according to rules if both coaches agree colored lax balls can used in the college game too.
Hi, i know that this is not exactly about this specific article, although i do love how these pll goalies are looking, especially the one on Chaos. He had some amazing saves at close range.
I am a player who is transitioning to goalie, and i want to take some 1 on 1 lessons to get on the right track. I live in southern california, and since laxgoalierat is based in northern california, I was wondering if you knew of any people down south in the Long Beach area (if you know where that is; if you dont, its in the LA area) who are goalie coaches. Thank you.
Hey Noah! Yeah checkout Crease Coach – https://www.creasecoach.com – Had Johnny Rodriguez on the podcast. He’s based in SoCal.
What’s interesting to me is the split of the stringing setups. Although they’re all using the same head, there’s an even split between two U’s and two/three straight shooting laces. I’m always curious why a particular goalie prefers one over the other.
The more I watch the PLL – the more I think U’s are the way to go. Check out my instagram I just posted. There’s this slow motion clip where you can really see the U gripping the rebound.
I see many of these goalies are using the 2 U string setup. Why is this? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each pattern of strings? I have never quite understood it.
Gonna write a post on this.
