Learning About Lacrosse in Uganda with Allan Amone – LGR 197

This Episode Is Brought To You By:

My guest on today’s episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast is a goalie with Uganda Lacrosse, Allan Amone.

Allan has been playing lacrosse for several years now and has played in multiple world championships with Team Uganda.

In fact, Uganda has qualified for the upcoming World Championships in San Diego later this summer 2023.

Allan and team Uganda qualified after coming back to defeat Kenya in overtime in a thrilling game. Allan made a huge clutch save in the dying moments to send the game into OT where his team would win.

Allan started playing lacrosse when he was working to play soccer at his university. The Ugandan lacrosse team was using the same field as his soccer team to run their practices. He had a chance to see friends playing the sport and was so excited to see the game and joined the team not long after.

Amone was a goalie in soccer and made the transition to lacrosse goalie after feeling the two positions had so many similarities he decided to hop in the net.

He did drills like walk the line and ladder drills to help him become a better goalie as well as watching YouTube videos to help see how other goalies play the game so he could emulate their styles.

Allen would then join the Ugandan national team and travel to Denver in 2014 as a part of the first African nation to play in a World Lacrosse Championship.

While the team was relatively new to the game they had an amazing experience getting to watch other great nations and Allen even got to learn from some great players like Tom Schreiber on what to look for when trying to read shooter.

Allen would then return with team Uganda to the World Championship stage in 2018 in Netanya, Israel. This time with more experience under their belts the team would have a better showing going 1-3 in pool play and finishing 40th of 46 nations in the final standings.

I hope you enjoy my conversation with Allen where we discuss topics like how he learned the position and the state of lacrosse in Uganda.
