Saint Joseph’s junior goalie Tommy Gross has built his game around explosiveness, confidence, and a strong mental approach.

With one of the best goals-against averages in the country and a season filled with clutch performances, Gross is proving to be a backbone for his team. But his journey wasn’t just about making saves—it was about learning to handle pressure, embracing his role, and finding his “why.”

Gross recalls his early days in goal, quickly realizing that taking a shot was better than getting checked. He didn’t study lacrosse goalies until high school, where players like Drake Porter and Will Mark caught his attention. Training with Blaze Riordan reinforced that every goalie can bring something unique to the position.

Now, as a leader on and off the field, Gross emphasizes the importance of his mindset — something he wishes he had focused on earlier. His message to younger players is clear: remember your “why” and give 100% of whatever you have. For him, that “why” is faith, family, and being a role model for younger black players and other minorities in the sport.
