2022 Men’s NCAA Division 1 Top 20 Goalie Gear Setups

With the 2022 Division 1 lacrosse season over half way done it’s time for the goalie gear setup post!

If you’re new here, this is where I take a look at the Top 20 ranked teams and we see what gear their goalie is using.

This blog post is somewhat of a tradition now and here are some past posts in this series:

The list of Top 20 teams was taken from Inside Lacrosse ranking as of April 10th, 2022. By the time you read this post the current men’s top 20 might look very different as it continues to shape and morph all season long.

But as of right now, here are the top 20 teams, their goalies, and those goalies lacrosse gear setups. For this post I dropped in a few links to the save edits in case you want to check out these goalies in action.

To answer a couple common questions –

  1. Yes, the female goalie post is coming soon.
  2. Yes, I would also like to know company mesh they’re using but its near impossible to determine in photos.
  3. Chest pad is also tough to determine in photos. I included a few where I know the goalie well or its peaking out of the jersey in a photo.
  4. Yes, I would love to cover D2, D3, and MCLA but I can barely keep up with D1.

Let’s get into it! If you see any errors in this post, leave me a comment down below.

2022 NCAA D1 Men’s Lacrosse Goalie Gear Setups

1. Maryland – Logan McNaney

McNaney was a pre-season and mid-season All-American honorable mention. Tried to get Logan on the podcast but he politely declined, which I respect.

Here are a few Logan McNaney save edits:

How about this play?

2. Georgetown – Owen McElroy

Here’s a pic of all Owen’s gear that we did for the #laxfitgrid series on IG:

Preseason and midseason 1st team All-American McElroy is having a great season! A minor injury kept him out of the last few games but he’ll back to try to lead the Hoyas to a national championship and win a 2nd consecutive goalie of the year award.

Want to get some virtual training from Owen McElroy? As one of the Lax Goalie Rat sponsored goalies we’ve put together an awesome college goalie training pack. Check it out here!

 3. Princeton – Erik Peters

Did you see Erik Peters straight vibing? I have a podcast recorded with Erik and it should be released shortly.

Erik Peters was a mid-season All-American honorable mention for games like this 21 save beauty:

4. Rutgers – Colin Kirst

  • Head: STX Eclipse 2
  • Mesh: 12 Diamond (I’ve seen pics with Kirst using 20D but looks like 12D is current setup)
  • Shaft: Attack Length
  • Shooters: 1 U, 1 Nylon
  • Chest Pad: Maverik EKG Max (you can see it in that last photo)
  • Gloves: Maverik Max

Colin Kirst was the pre-season 3rd team All-American and remained there in the mid-season selections. Here’s some save edits featuring with Colin Kirst:

Hope to get Colin on the podcast one day.

5. Yale – Jared Paquette

One of the interesting preseason stories as everyone was expecting Jack Starr who led Yale to 2 national championship games to get the start. But Paquette won the job and hasn’t lost it.

6. Cornell – Chayse Ierlan

Save edits with Chase Ierlan:

7. Virginia – Matthew Nunes

Virginia is a Warrior sponsored school so it makes sense that Freshman Matthew Nunes rocks the full Warrior setup.

Here’s some save edits with Matt Nunes:

Edit: I originally had Nunes using the Warrior Nemi 3 since they’re a Warrior school but as a few readers let me know, that was not the Nemi 3. Thanks for the correction! He wiped off the UA logo from the top which makes sense.

8. Penn – Patrick Burkinshaw

Mike Adler vs. Patrick Burkinshaw – Duke vs. Penn

9. Ohio State – Skylar Wahlund

Caton Johnson got some early starts for the Buckeyes but lately its been Skylar Wahlund manning the nets.

10. Harvard – Kyle Mullin

The men in Crimson are 7-2 in large part thanks to the incredible goalie play from Kyle Mullin.

Kyle Mullin vs. Connor Theriault – Harvard vs. Brown

Save of the year candidate right here:

And of course this walk-off save with no time left to secure the Harvard win:

11. Jacksonville – Luke Mullican

The North Carolina transfer has been a part of the Dolphins strong season that has them currently sitting at the #11 seed.

His strong play earned him a mid-season All-American honorable mention nod.

12. Army – Wyatt Schupler

Wyatt Schupler (Army) vs. Rich O’Halloran (Bucknell)

Only goalie on this list to notch a goalie goal so far this season:

13. Boston U – Matt Garber

This pic is pure gold:

Probably based on that above photo Matt Garber is a mid-season All-American honorable mention.

14. Notre Dame – Liam Entenmann

Liam Entenmann was a pre-season 2nd team All-American selection however with the entire Notre Dame team struggling early in the season, he was nowhere to be found on the mid-season picks.

Entenmann is a super talented goalie and if Notre Dame can recapture their magic and go on a run, we shouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the All-American selections at the end of the year.

Entenmann has a save of the year candidate:

15. Duke – Mike Adler

Adler plays for #teamunfairadvantage aka sticks strung up the SidewallJedi Lars Kiel himself:

Adler like Entenmann was a pre-season All-American honorable mention but with Duke getting knocked off several times early in the season he’s not on the mid-season rankings.

16. North Carolina – Collin Krieg

Collin Krieg was a preseason All-American honorable mention coming off a strong season. But his fellow ACC goalies no goalie has really escaped the gauntlet of that league. In his sophomore season Krieg is saving the ball at 51% (41st in the NCAA) with a 12.5 GAA (47th).

17. Richmond – Zach Vigue

Just a redshirt freshman Vigue came up huge against the Spiders massive upset against Virginia.

Here is a save edit with Richmond goalie Zach Vigue:

18. Villanova – Will Vitton

Here’s a save edit of Will during the 2021 season:

19. Lehigh – James Spence

Lehigh is also another Warrior sponsored school so goalie James Spence is decked out in Warrior gear. Haven’t seen any pic but we can assume he’s using the Warrior Nemi Pro chest pad too.

Here’s a save edit featuring Lehigh and Spence from last year:

20. UMass – Matt Knote

UMass has a history of pumping out incredible goalies including PLL goalie Sean Sconone and Team USA goalie Zach Oliveri

Conclusion

There you have it – 20 NCAA Division 1 starting goalies, 20 stick setups. Let’s recap the numbers.

Head:

  • STX Eclipse 2 – 17
  • Warrior Nemesis 3 – 3

STX Eclipse 2 continues its dominance at the college ranks. I guess I’m surprised only 2 heads represented in the top 20.

Mesh:

  • 12 Diamond – 20

Clean sweep for the 12 diamond. It really is the industry standard offering the best of both worlds.

Shaft:

  • Attack Length – 13
  • Goalie Length – 7

Attack length I’d classify has your standard 30″ shaft. Anything larger I’ve labeled a goalie shaft. In some of the pics it’s a little tricky to determine exact shaft based on where they have their hands.

Shooters:

  • 2 Straight Across – 4
  • 2 U’s – 3
  • 2 U, 1 Nylon – 3
  • Ghost pocket – 2
  • 2 Straight Across, 1 Nylon – 2
  • 1 U, 1 Nylon – 1
  • 1 Straight Across – 1
  • 1 Nylon, 1 U, 1 Straight Across – 1
  • 1 Nylon – 1
  • 1 straight across, 1 nylon – 1
  • 3 Straight Across – 1

A standard two shooters straight across is the most popular amongst this group when it comes to the shooting string setup. But lot’s of variety there including the a few ghost pockets with no shooters.

With the goalies I’ve spoken to for the podcast they tell they’ll often throw in an extra shooter depending on how the mesh is performing or the conditions for that day.

Gloves:

  • STX Cell V – 5
  • Under Armour Engage 2 – 3
  • Warrior Nemesis Pro – 3
  • Maverik Rome – 3
  • Maverik Max – 2
  • STX Shield 500 – 2
  • Maverik M5
  • Epoch Integra Pro

STX newest model leads the pack followed by the top editions of UA, Warrior, and Maverik.

  1. Hi Coach. I always like reading these gear set ups. I think you might be wrong on the head that Nunes uses. It looks like from pictures that he’s using th UA Command. I definitely could be wrong on that but it doesn’t look like the Nemesis 3.
