Marquette Goalie Max Christides on Lessons Learned as a Backup – LGR Episode 171

This Episode Is Brought To You By:

On today’s Lax Goalie Rat Podcast episode, I sit down to chat with Marquette goalie Max Christides.

Max is entering his senior season with the Golden Eagles after transferring from UMass Lowell in the fall of 2021.

Prior to his college career the native of Bloomfield Hills, MI played his high school ball at Cranbrook in his hometown where he became the first-team all-state as a freshman in program history, was named to the All-Catholic League and helped lead Cranbrook to the Final Four and Regional Championship his freshman and sophomore year.

Christides started to grab the attention of college coaches though after a stellar performance with True Lacrosse Michigan during his sophomore year.

His best performance came in a tournament on the east coast which would eventually put him on the radar of the coaches at UMass Lowell. Max choose UMass Lowell as the school had the business program he wanted to attend and had always liked the opportunity to live in Boston.

UMass Lowell was also the place that Hunter Braun, a goalie Max looked up to as a youth had gone to and the idea of following in his footsteps helped drive him to commit.

Upon arrival a bad injury during his fall semester followed by the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused Max to lose his entire freshman year.

He didn’t necessarily look at this as a negative, however, and instead choose to focus on his academics and taking time to develop his game in preparation for his sophomore season.

Max would go on to start seven for the River Hawks in his sophomore year posting a .480 save percentage highlighted by a career-high 19 saves in a 16-9 loss to Stony Brook.

At the beginning of his sophomore season with no lacrosse to play because of COVID Max began to start looking at other aspects of his life such as his social life and academics. After some consideration throughout the year, he ultimately came to the decision that he wanted to pursue other opportunities athletically and academically and entered the transfer portal.

Marquette was on his short list of schools he wanted to go to and in early August he would end up getting a from the Maquette head coach and would end up moving to Milwaukee a few weeks after that.

While Max didn’t end up starting for the Golden Eagles in his first year with the program he found many other ways in which he could help and support his team as a leader on and off the field, something he shares with us on the show.

Heading into 2023, Max is focused on winning that starting role and helping lead Marquette to a successful year in the Big East.

Max also has spent time with the Greek National Lacrosse team and is hoping to land a spot on their roster heading into the World Championships in San Diego next summer.

Max joins the show today to talk about his recruiting story, getting out of a slump, transferring to Marquette, and much more!
