Matt McMonagle finished his career as the 19th three-time All-American in Cornell men’s lacrosse history.

In 2007 apart from being on the Tewaaraton watch list, McMonagle won the C. Markland Kelly award for goalie of the year. Later McMonagle was inducted into Cornell’s Hall of Fame.

In this interview we go through the goalie career of McMonagle who grew up in the Philadelphia area. We discuss his progress from stepping between the pipes on day 1 to eventually ending up in Ithaca at Cornell. And finally as a goalie in the MLL.

Following graduation, he was selected by the Long Island Lizards in the first round of the Major League Lacrosse draft, taken with the 10th overall pick. We discuss his experience playing in pros.

McMonagle and the Cornell Big Red suffered an immense tragedy in 2004 when George Boiardi was struck in the chest and collapsed on the field. Paramedics were unable to revive Boiardi and he died in the hospital a little later. McMonagle discusses this event and how it impacted him and his teammates on the Big Red.

Pretty cool moment in this show when discussing Matt’s goalies he really learned from. He mentioned Mickey Jarboe who I had just recorded an episode with not 2 hours early. Small world. Here is episode #98 with Mickey Jarboe.

Great episode with a great guy and a great goalie!
